Web 2.0 Hip or Hype? New ways to engage users with content

Jointly organised by the Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers and Scholarly Information Strategies

The phrase ‘Web 2.0’ looks like it will soon top the internet buzzword charts. If you haven't yet heard of Web 2.0, you soon will. If you have heard of it, you might already be rolling your eyes.

'Web 2.0’ is used to describe the underlying common characteristics of a host of technologies including blogs, wikis, social bookmarking tools, syndication services and, even podcasting. These tools emphasize creating and remixing content, not just consuming it. They focus on the web as a ‘platform’, instead of a series of discrete sites. The technological shift represented by Web 2.0 is accompanied by an equally important shift in business and marketing philosophy, in which content producers increasingly ‘give up control’ of their sites and content in order to create (and monetize) user-driven online ecosystems.

How much of Web 2.0 is real and how much is hype? What do publishers and societies need to know about Web 2.0? This update will explain the concepts behind Web 2.0 using real examples of how Web 2.0 technologies are currently being used by scholars, librarians and the broader commercial world.

Who should attend: The speakers will be focusing on publisher applications of Web 2.0 technologies, but the meeting should be of interest to publishers, societies, librarians and academics.
