In this year's lecture, Bill Thompson will look at whether excessive commercial practices are undermining the freedoms and value of the net.

Bill Thompson, the well-known technology commentator, writer and broadcaster will give this year’s NMK Christmas lecture, which is presented in association with Open Democracy and Cybersalon.

Bill will chart the early history of the Internet – how, why and for whom it was created, and the public ethos behind its development, before going on to describe the Internet today, and what he sees as the commercial interests and practices that are threatening to undermine it. The lecture will be followed by a chaired discussion, and then music from the Cybersalon DJs, and drinks in the ICA bar. The event is intended to bring new media professionals, academics, commentators, journalists and policy makers together to think critically about what has happened over the last year, and assess future developments in the digital economy.
