Work at the Vista Hothouse - announced July 12th 2006 - will consist of designing, developing and testing applications and exploring the limits of what Vista and the Windows Presentation Framework (WPF) can do.
Conchango was recently cited as the leading design agency in the Forrester Wave™: European Web Design Agencies evaluation and is building on its design and technology expertise to push into the new opportunities afforded by the new technologies.
Paul Dawson, head of interactive media, Conchango, said: “We have been working with the tools and technologies of Vista and related applications for around six months now and are aiming high in terms of what we want to do with these new technologies, and so we need to accelerate our pace of change and learning.”
Responding to consumers' participation in social computing
“The key difference between web or current application design and development is that the relationship between designers and developers has to be even closer. Although we have integrated teams right now, the need for a ‘hothouse’ was about finding ways to make this way of working even tighter, so we can really push the boundaries of what the technology can do.”
Conchango’s pioneering move directly reflects the market’s desires to respond to the way consumers are now interacting with technology and are participating in social computing. This, in turn has an impact on developers and designers, who will need to work closer together to deliver Vista applications.
Conchango believes that Vista is not only revolutionising the way that Conchango’s designers and developers will work, but it’s also changing the types of skills developers need in order to deliver compelling user experiences on the new Windows Vista platform.
A hothouse for experience in emerging technologies
In a time when these technologies are emerging, there is very little opportunity for developers and designers to get practical project experience to build these skills. The Hothouse is a unique opportunity that will allow Conchango’s current teams and new recruits to get this experience on real projects a lot earlier. Conchango’s technical knowledge will be shared with the wider technical community through regular weblogs and workshops.
Conchango is also running an internal mini-version of Microsoft’s Code Master Challenge (http://www.codemasterchallenge.com/Home.aspx), offering a substantial cash prize for the best Vista application developed. The winners (and runners up) of the internal contest will also be entered into the global contest.
The difference in Conchango’s competition is that entrants must team up with members of staff with other relevant skills areas (such as design with user experience), to fully integrate and demonstrate the technical, design and usability aspects of their entries, which are hallmarks of the work Conchango produces for its customers.
