The massive popularity of file-sharing software and sites where films are among the majority of the content accessed is now being grasped as an opportunity - rather than a threat - by upcoming film directors not backed by major indepenedent funding or the studio system.
The forthcoming launch of Death To Hollywood.com embodies this trend towards using online as a medium to promote entertaiment and creative content ourside the corporate or mainstream perameters producers and consumers used to be limited to.
A free website which functions as an online movie theatre, Death To Hollywood provides high quality independent feature film downloads entirely for free and with the express permission of the producers.
Online movie bounty thanks to broadband
It serves to highlight the works of independent film makers by providing maximum ease of access to their work. As the team behind DTH explain, "it's now possible for an independent or low budget film maker to entirely bypass the traditional means of distribution and present his work directly to the public."
Team spokesperson Pam Paton elborated on the thinking behind the project: "We intend to make essentially low-cost feature length independent movies available to download with the minimum of obstacles placed in the way of the end user."
Window to a new horizon of talent
"We've succeeded in persuading a number of film makers that their movies will serve them better by being available to the public than not. Even the most modest of traditional supply strategies requires a significant outlay both in time and cost," she continued.
"Most so-called traditional online distribution deals that may be available to this class of film maker work better for the distributor than the film maker and can effectively stifle the potential popularity of a film by placing an unrealistic requirement upon the end user, that is to pay."
Low-budget film-makers go direct-to-consumer...
Paton views this expectation as unrealistic and prohibitive, adding that "a potential downloader must first be aware of a film and desirous to see it. It is a simple fact that he is far more likely to be aware of a Hollywood blockbuster with a built-in 100 million dollar promotions budget. Therefore, it's necessary to place an independent film on as equal a footing as can be managed or it simply will not be seen."
"It is reasonable to provide the most convenient possible access to their movies and most certainly for free," she added.
Recommendation and trusted sources provide the push...
As Paton sees it, there's a possibility that if a movie is sufficiently entertaining it can spread by recommendation and ultimately become what might be considered a success, and by this she means viewed by a great number of people.
"Our official launch date will be October but most of the site is already active including the epic trilogy Bored Of The Rings which we consider to be a set of movies which have the potential to become a cult phenomenon as they represent perhaps a new milestone in what can now be achieved in no budget independent film making by making use of the astonishing array of relatively cheap digital filming and editing systems, amazing and even inspirational."
Pushing the point home, Paton stressed the significance of the project could only be appreciated when viewed within a wider context. "Our project is the first of what will become many examples of this and that we are contributing to the development and distribution of new media in the 21st Century."

Death-To-Hollywood.com What A Fantastic Concept !!
I am delighted to see an article on deathtohollywood.com here at NMK.
I recently received an email from a friend in Canada with a url for Death-to-Hollywood.com and I have since downloaded Bored of the Rings and the other evening I invited 6 friends round to watch the movie and....well all I can say is that we were all of the same opinion and that was...... that it was one of the most entertaining 2hours and 10 minutes we have spent for many a year...."Ganjalf the green" "Friggo Bugger" and "Spam Wise-Gadgee" to name but a few had us in tears of laughter and also tears of sadness as this Epic spoof/parody/satire took us through a tumult of emotions and touched or sensibilities to the core.
I/we were also extremely impressed by the quality of Bored of the Rings as we could see no discernable difference between Bored of the Rings and any recently hired DVD from our local Blockbusters.
Glenn Millar as the Director/Producer has also greatly impressed us and I noticed that there was another of Mr. Millar?s movies available for download at Death-to Hollywood.com and I am presently downloading Godsend Episode II "Oh My Dog" I look forward in great anticipation to watching Godsend with my friends at our next "Movie Night"
The caliber of the cast was also impressive for a "no-budget" movie we were particularly impressed with the main characters also the crew Mr. Millar has used to create this ....well "Masterpiece on a shoestring" must be commended also.
As well as Godsend Episode II "Oh My Dog". I and my friends are downloading the whole catalogue of movies that can be found at Death-To-Hollywood.com and from the information to be found at website and the "proof of the pudding" we found in Bored of the Rings we should have very entertaining "Movie Nights" for the foreseeable future :-)
In closing myself and my "Movie Night" friends have to say is....... More power to Death-to-Hollywood.com and long may they provide us with thought provoking and entertaining Independent films
