Nokia Shorts, now in its third year, is a unique competition which encourages the development of short films designed specifically to be played on mobile devices. To cast an eye over last year’s fantastic finalists and to find this year’s entry details go to www.nokiashorts.co.uk
Since the launch of Nokia Shorts, video capabilities of mobile phones have developed apace. The latest Nokia camera device, the Nokia N90, features Carl Zeiss optics and the ability to record video at VHS quality. To reflect these developments, this year’s Nokia Shorts features a new challenge: a category for films made and edited entirely on a mobile handset.
Nokia Shorts is a collaboration between Nokia and Raindance, an organisation dedicated to fostering and promoting independent film in the UK. This year’s competition is being championed by critically acclaimed director, Shane Meadows, who will be inspiring potential entrants with his own 15-second film made using the new Nokia N90. Most famous for last year’s gritty flick, Dead Man’s Shoes, Shane has more than 10 years’ experience in the industry, working on over 70 critically acclaimed short films and five award-winning features.
Micro-movie challenge
Shane Meadows commented: "This is one of the most unique film competitions out there. The quality of the finalists over the last two years is just astounding. I’m intrigued, if slightly daunted, about the prospect of making my own 15-second film.”
From today, film-makers can begin submitting their 15-second ‘micro-movies’. These can be made using standard digital recording equipment for the main category or a mobile device for the handset-only category.
This year’s entrants will have a lot to live up to following the high quality of 2004’s finalists. There was animation, drama and surreal comedy – all executed within 15 seconds and designed to played on the small screen of a mobile phone.
Handset-only category makes its debut
“Nokia Shorts has gone from strength to strength over the past two years and is a testament to the talent that exists among young UK film-makers,” said Mark Squires, communications director, Nokia UK. “The video capabilities of mobile devices have moved forward to such an extent that we feel it is now the right time to introduce a handset-only segment to the competition. We are very much looking forward to seeing this year’s entries.”
“Nokia Shorts has become one of the main talking points of people attending our courses and a highlight of the Raindance Film Festival,” said Elliot Grove, director and founder of Raindance. “Everyone’s busy thinking of their 15-second film! The key to a good entry is in being able to come up with a 15-second concept and not trying to cram a good idea into 15 seconds.”
Entry details and specifications for this year’s competition will be available at www.nokiashorts.co.uk. The deadline for entries is 15th August 2005.
About Nokia Shorts:
Nokia Shorts is a groundbreaking short film competition. Entries should be no longer than 15 second and can be made using standard digital recording equipment for the main category or a mobile device for the handset-only category. All the entries will be viewed by a panel of film experts, who will select 10 finalists for each category. These entries will be screened at this year’s 13th Raindance Film Festival (28th September – 9 October) and be shown on www.nokiashorts.co.uk where members of the public will be invited to vote for their favourites. The winner of the main category will have the chance to make a short film for Nokia which will be distributed online and to mobile devices, while the winner of the handset-only category will win more than £1,000 worth of camera equipment.
