Intellectual property is a hot-button topic across the digital media industry. Directors, creatives, technologists, marketers, brand and biz-dev managers of all stripes have to handle tricky IP issues on a daily basis. Now there’s a place to bring your real-life queries for a diagnosis…

From 1st February 2005 a new service from NMK and Briffa will provide clarity in this complex and evolving area of managing business assets, tackling your questions and addressing real-world IP quandaries.

Intellectual property covers the protection of copyright, designs, patents, trademarks, trade secrets and information technology. So whether you’re a freelance developer or a senior brand strategist, and however intellectual property touches your work, the IP Surgery is open to you.

Each month individuals and companies can submit questions on a pre-defined area or topic of intellectual property, by e-mailing the NMK knowledge network. The e-mailbag will be sifted by solicitor Paul Randle and trainee solicitor Alex Papakyriacou at Briffa, leading new media and intellectual property law experts, who will publish their considered legal opinions in response on the NMK website.

In turn, Briffa will provide further insight through regular articles exploring the latest developments and twists in the global IP sphere. Insight to be found, of course, right here on NMK.

Surgery 1: Electronic Marketing

The first of these surgeries will relate to the law regarding electronic marketing. This area is in constant flux and has undergone many changes in the last year, as Briffa’s forthcoming article for NMK on the recent landmark case on Google Adwords will testify. Briffa’s Paul Randle and Alex Papakyriacou have recently provided an article as an introduction to this topic.

So send us your questions (in brief outline) in relation to the legal aspects of electronic marketing.

In turn, Briffa will provide further insight through regular articles exploring the latest developments and twists in the global IP sphere. Insight to be found, of course, right here on NMK.
